Come Along On Our 8th Annual Bridge Trip To China
October 1 - October 14, 2025
Our 8th annual China Bridge Tour is now official with special plans to visit several dozen classic Chinese Covered Bridges that show an amazing engineering history that dates back hundreds of years. These timber spans were built by generations of craftsman whose skills created a unique series of rare engineering styles that use intricate and precise placement of beams referred to as the woven arch beam. These polygonal arches are unlike the American and European trusses as they were built with parallel logs whose angles alternate giving an interwoven look that requires three or five interlocking sections below the deck.
Largely hidden high within the mountains of Eastern China, these ancient crossings are located in Taishun and Qingyuan counties in Zhejiang Province, as well as in Fuzhou and Guizhou Provinces. The "Langqiao" crossings within the second half of the trip are generally referred to as Corridor Covered Bridges or Wind and Rain Bridges that are far larger and more complex than any existing covered spans in the United States. The interiors of these massive structures often have tall, multi-level roofs and enough seats to handle hundreds of people. These river valleys are so wide that multiple masonry piers were required but they also allow for large spaces that have cantilevered viewing areas as well as religious shrines and food stalls.
Another popular style of covered bridge we will see is the Cantilever Log style. By using a criss-cross stack of logs, the heavy weight of the deck, walls and roof are supported from underneath even if they are more susceptible to flood damage.

The trip will only be open to a maximum of 6 people as we will be traveling in one or two oversized SUVs. This is no chartered bus trip for a group of 50 people looking to peer out a window to snap a quick photo of a bridge but a gathering of adventurous bridge fanatics who don’t mind a journey off the beaten path.
Our 8th annual bridge trip will follow the pattern set with the 2011, 2012, 2013, 2014, 2015 and 2016 High Bridge Trips with a small group of bridge fans meeting in Shanghai before we head out into the remote villages of Zhejiang Province.
Expect to smell, touch and feel these bridges in a way you cannot easily do in Europe or the U.S. Prepare for some dust, dirt and a little bit of sweat.
You will visit more than 30 of the world's classic covered bridges on this trip
including Yangmeizhou, Yongji, Houkeng, Bajiang, Rulong, Santiao and so much more!
