Mexico’s highest reservoir bridge, the massive Puente Chiapas had to be constructed over a full reservoir requiring some unusual construction techniques never before seen on a North American bridge. With the water reaching depths of 295 feet (90 mtrs), the engineers constructed quad shaped piers with 4 steel tubes 33 feet (10 mtrs) apart from each other. Constructed in sections near the shoreline, special tube shaped pontoons were threaded through the pier pieces. The giant pier pieces were then floated out horizontally and carefully allowed to sink into place vertically from a gradual release of air in a method similar to the construction of oil platforms.

The 2-lane bridge crosses over Nezahualcoyotl Lake on the Coapas-Ocozocoautla highway and opened in December of 2003.
