Wedged between two cliffs high in the Swiss Alps, the Dala Gorge bridge opened in 1991 as one of Europe’s highest strut frame bridges. Rising 427 feet (130 mtrs) above the river, the huge 688 foot (210 mtr) steel dual box girder is supported on two struts 173 feet (52.6 mtrs) long. Each strut was constructed vertically and then lowered into position with cable stays. Other designs were considered including a cable stayed bridge with inclined towers.
