The highest bridge in North American upon its completion in 1919, the Hansen suspension bridge had a main span of 608 feet (185 mtrs) and a pony truss side span of 80 feet (24 mtrs). Engineer R. M. Murray enclosed the road deck within an extremely large stiffening truss 20 feet (6 mtrs) deep. The truss was 17 feet (5 mtrs) wide between the centerline of the beams while the two main cables were 30 feet (9 mtrs) apart at the towers. To ensure the rigidity of the span, two large wind cables were located below the full length of the deck and anchored into rock on the rims of the gorge. The north tower was the tallest of the two at 117 feet (36 mtrs). Total cost: $100,000.

With a road deck width of just 14 feet (4 mtrs), the bridge had been obsolete for years and in 1966 the old suspension span was replaced by a new steel girder Hansen bridge with two concrete piers that descend all the way to the bottom of the canyon.
