The Azhihe River bridge was one of 4 medium sized suspension bridges that were designed and built in the same time period by the Major Bridge Reconnaissance Design Institute in Wuhan, Hubei, China.  The bridges all share common traits including an extremely thin 2 foot (.6 mtr) thick prestressed concrete slab deck and cable suspenders just 16 feet (5 mtrs) apart.  Since all 4 bridges were of similar length and in similar gorge settings, it was economical and efficient to design them at the same time.  The other 3 include the Beipanjiang 2003, Xixi and Luojiaohe bridgesAll four are among the world’s 60 highest bridges.

The second highest concrete beam bridge in China and the highest reservoir bridge in the world, Mangjiedu was constructed to cross the massive man-made lake that was forming behind Xiaowan, the highest concrete dam in the world.  The spectacular 958 foot (292 mtr) high double curvature structure created a body of water some 820 feet (250 meters) deep along the Mekong (Lancang Jiang), a river with several of the largest and highest hydroelectric dams in the world including the Manwan, Dachaoshan, Nuozhadu and Jinghong.  The Mekong river is the only international river in Asia linking 6 countries.  The river has more species of fish than any other waterway on earth except for the Amazon.

Azhihe is most similar to Xixi with an elevated side span on the north side of the bridge that leaves the cable anchorages about 100 feet (30 mtrs) below the level of the road deckThe south side span of the bridge is less interesting but earns points for being at the entrance to a tunnel.  Of course the real magic of Azhihe is the location of the bridgeSoaring 810 feet (247 mtrs) above the Azhi River, the bridge is 85 percent as high as Colorado’s Royal Gorge bridge and nearly as spectacular.  The south side of the canyon is especially precipitous, dropping nearly straight down into a gorge with an unusually narrow “throat”. The bridge is just one of several spectacular bridges on the new two lane road that now connects Liupanshui with the Guiyang to Kunming highwayThe region has one of the highest concentration of high bridges in the world with the Liuguanghe, Jiangjiehe, Balinghe and the 3 crossings of the Beipanjiang all within a radius of 100 miles (161 kms).

Located about 30 miles (48 kms) from the dam, the Mangjiedu bridge crosses high above the river with most of the 551 foot (168 meter) tall piers rising above the full level of the reservoir. Just two lanes wide, the narrow 722 foot (220 meter) main span of the continuous rigid-frame bridge seems even higher than it is, precariously balanced on the second highest set of bridge piers in all of China. The country is home to 9 of the world’s 10 highest reservoir bridges.

The Mangjiedu bridge is one of 4 massive continuous rigid-frame bridges that opened in Western China’s Yunnan province between 2003 and 2009. Three of the bridges are similar in height while only the Honghe bridge carries 4 lanes of traffic.

A visit to the Mangjiedu bridge requires no less than 3 days round trip from Yunnan’s capital city of Kunming. First you will need to take a bus, train or plane west from Kunming to the popular tourist city of Xiaguan. The next day you will want to get an early start and hire a driver who will then go south to Nanjian and then west to Dengtu. Expect an adventurous day filled with crazy driving and rough roads.
