One of the largest and most extensive tourist temple scenic areas in all of China, the Mianshan Scenic area was mostly developed after 1995 by a coal company chairman named Yanjiying. Located a few hours drive south of the popular ancient tourist city of Pingyao, the Mianshan gorge now boasts dozens of large temples that seem to cascade down the mountainsides with all manner of statues, stone carvings and sculptures. Only a fleet of buses are allowed along the one access road that twists and winds up the canyon, stopping at each of the various hanging temples.

For high cliffwalk fans, one of the temples has a zig-zag group of stairs attached to a vertical rock face at least 60 meters high. In addition to the many temples to visit, there is the mysterious Qixian slot canyon with a series of precarious ladders and steps bolted into the sides of the rock just above the stream. There are also two cliff elevators, one which leads to a hotel.
