Similar in design to many other high viaducts along Italy’s A3 motorway, the original Viadotto Sant'Onofrio had slender rectangular piers topped with cantilevered hammerhead supportsPrecast concrete drop-in spans rested on “chairs” at either end of the hammerhead capIn 2009 it all came crashing down when the 1974 structure was imploded after one of two new Sant'Onofrio bridges opened parallel to the original.

The new Viadotto Sant'Onofrio is a twin span replacement for the 1974 original which was imploded in 2009 as part of a major upgrade to sections of Italy’s A3 motorway.  The new bridges have equal depth steel girder spans instead of suspended concrete beam spans as was on the originalThe new crossing is 357 meters long.
