The Unkai bridge is yet another Japanese bridge to have an asymmetrical arch with one side terminating into the foundation lower than the other. In this case the height differential is 49 feet (15 mtrs). Like most of the high bridges in Takachiho gorge, the cliffs on either side of the span are nearly vertical.

Unkai was the highest road bridge in Japan upon it completion in 1972 and the second highest overall in Japan after the nearby Takachiho gorge railway bridge. Both were also the first bridges in Japan to exceed 100 meters (328 feet) in height.

Since these two bridges were completed in the early 1970s, Takachiho Gorge has become a region with more high bridges than any other single location in Japan. These include the Tensho, Shintotakachiho and Aoba concrete arches, the Ryuten and Seiun steel arches and the Kamiiwato concrete beam bridge. All 8 bridges are more than 328 feet (100 mtrs) in height. If you have just one day to visit high bridges in Japan, Takachiho gorge is the place to be!

この橋も非対称アーチの一つで、一方のアーチは別の基礎より低い橋の基礎に結合しています。この際の高さの違いは15mです。高千穂峡谷の殆どの高い橋梁の場合、一方の橋が架かっている崖は垂直に近いものばかりです。

1972年に完成した当時、雲海橋は車道橋梁として日本一高い橋でした。そして、全ての橋の中では、近くにある高千穂鉄橋についで、二番目に高い橋となりました。また、両橋梁は、100mを超える橋としては初めてのものでした。

この二つの橋は1970年代当初に完成したため、高千穂峡谷は、日本の他のどの一地域よりも多くの高い橋がある地域となりました。これに含まれる橋としては、コンクリートアーチ橋の天翔大橋、神都高千穂大橋、青葉大橋、鋼アーチ橋の龍天橋と青雲橋、コンクリートビーム橋の上岩戸大橋です。この八つ全ての橋は高さ100m以上です。もし、あなたが一日だけで高い橋をたくさん見たいのであれば、高千穂峡谷地域がお勧めの場所です！
