The Vaux Viaduct crosses a deep valley on Switzerland’s A1 motorway with two two tall central piers supporting two main spans of 427 feet (130 mtrs). A curved steel concrete composite girder bridge, the two separate box girders were launched from the abutment on the east end. The launching of such an unusually long span resulted in a downward vertical displacement of 15 feet (4.5 mtrs). The bending forces had all been calculated in advance however and height adjustments were made at the abutment to raise the level of the launching nose over the central pier. The Vaux is nearly as high as the neighboring Mentue Viaduct located just to the west.
