The Chishui River is one of the greatest in Western China, forming a border between Yunnan and Guizhou Provinces. No engineer gets off easy trying to cross this deep canyon. To successfully carry the twin track Guiyang-Chengdu Railway line over the river, a central cantilevered beam span configuration of 92+168+92 meters was adopted. The tallest pier measures 107 meters.

The Guiyang-Chengdu line has two other beam bridges over 150 meters high including the Diaolanhe and Luojiaohe bridges east of Bijie, Guizhou. The most spectacular span on the line is the great Yaxi Railway Bridge with a central arch of 436 meters almost 300 meters above the original level of the Wujiang River.
