The highest conventional suspension footbridge in the world at the time of its completion in 1984, the Teruha footbridge crosses 466 feet (142 mtrs) over the Aya or south river in Japan’s mountainous Miyazaki prefecture. In 2006, it was surpassed by another Japanese giant, the 568 foot (173 mtr) high Kokonoe "Yume" Otsurihashi, a footbridge that had the second longest span of any conventional two tower footbridge in the world at 1,280 feet (390 mtrs) before being surpassed in later years by several Chinese footbridges.

Also referred to as the Aya Teruha bridge after its location near Aya Town, the word Teruha means shining leaves. Floating over the evergreen forest of the Kyushu Central Mountain Range National Park, the large span of 820 feet (250 mtrs) is supported by two towers 92 feet (28 mtrs) tall. Extra stability is assured from a pair of wind cables below the deck. 99 suspender cables are spaced 8.2 feet (2.5 mtrs) apart across the full length of the span. The Aya Teruha bridge is approximately 15 miles (16 kms) west of the port city of Miyazaki in southern Japan.

Other high footbridges in Japan include the the Ryujin with the world’s third longest two tower suspension footbridge span of 1,230 feet (375 mtrs), soaring nearly 328 feet (100 mtrs) over a reservoir. Living up to its name is the Ueno Skybridge with a walkway 295 feet (90 mtrs) above a forested valley. Constructed in Totsukawa, Nara prefecture in 1954, the 177 foot (54 mtrs) high Tanise suspension bridge is one of Japan’s oldest footbridges and is unusual for having two separate sets of cables supporting a span 974 feet (297 mtrs) long.

1984年に完成した際には、照葉大吊橋は世界で最も高い一般的な人道吊橋でした。高さ142mに及ぶこの橋は日本の宮崎県の山あいに流れる綾川（南川）にかかっています。2006年に、別の日本の巨大な九重“夢”大つり橋（高さ173m）に追い越されてしまいました。歩行者用であるこの橋は、世界にある一般的な二つのタワー橋の中では最も長いスパン(390m)を持っています。しかし、どちらの橋も、マレーシア、セランゴルのスンウェイラグーン・テーマパーク（Sunway Lagoon Theme Park in Selangor, Malaysia）にある全長428mのカテナリーつり橋ほど長くはありません。スイスのニオク（Niouc）は現在世界で最も高い歩行者用つり橋ですが、タワーのないカテナリーつり橋です。カテナリーつり橋には、しばしば平らでなく不安定に傾斜するデッキがあるため多くの人はこの橋を真のつり橋として認めません。

また、綾町の近くに存在するため、この橋は綾照葉大吊橋として知られています。橋の名前にある“照”は葉に日が照ることを意味します。常緑樹に覆われた九州中部山間部の国立公園に浮かぶ250mスパンの橋は、高さ28mの二つのタワーによって支えられています。そして、デッキ下部のウインドケーブルによって特別な安定性が保障されています。スパン全長にわたり99の宙吊りケーブルが2.5mごとに配置されています。綾照葉大吊橋は、宮崎の港町よりおよそ16km西にあります。

他の高い歩行者用の橋としては、全長375mで世界で二番目に長い二つタワーの人道吊り橋である竜神大吊橋があります。貯水地より100m近く上空に舞い上がっています。名前の通りに活躍しているのが、森林の谷間より90m上空に架かっている上野スカイブリッジです。そして、1954年に奈良県十津川村に架設された高さ54mの谷瀬吊り橋は、日本で最も古い歩行者用吊り橋の一つで、珍しい点としては別々に分かれた二組のケーブルが297mのスパンを支えていることです。
