Top of Tyrol Viewing Platform
Neustift im Stubaital, Tyrol, Austria
(82) feet high / (25) meters high
(49) foot span / (15) meter span
2008

Located high up above the Stubai Glacier at 3,210 meters, the Top of Tyrol is one of the nicest and most beautifully designed tourist overlooks in Europe. Unlike most platforms that look like a foreign object out of its element that was simply placed onto the ground, the Stubai Glacier installation naturally blends into the earth with a series of curving tendrils that flow down the backside of the structure. The architectural firm of LAAC used the topography of the ground to dictate the shape of the steel, allowing the anchors to organically vanish into the snow and rock. The red-brown weathered Corten steel adds even more to the theme of an object that seems to have arisen naturally from the surrounding rocks.

The platform is located approximately 100 meters from the Schaufeljoch tramway summit station.
