Tongzhuanghe Bridge is one of Hubei Province's smallest two tower cable stayed bridges with a main span of 320 meters. Built across a tributary river of the Yagntze that is largely under Three Gorges reservoir water, the Tongzhuanghe Bridge is part of a triangle of 3 new bridges that include the Xiangxi Yangtze River arch bridge and the Xiangxihe cable stayed bridge just a few kilometers to the north on a similarly submerged tributary of the Yangtze River.
Tongzhuanghe Bridge was originally designed as a 240 meter span beam bridge but aesthetics and having to build piers in the deep waters of the 3 Gorges reservoir were likely the reasons for the switch to a cable stayed bridge.
