Located within the beautiful Maolin National Scenic Area is the Duona Suspension bridge - the highest footbridge in Taiwan at 338 feet (103 mtrs). The main span of 761 feet (232 mtrs) is one of the longest of its type in the world. The suspenders on the bridge are unusually close together - probably two feet. This close knit mesh of suspenders is also used to support a simple chain link fence as there is no railing. Despite a narrow walkway of about 6 feet (1.8 mtrs), automobiles occasionally use the bridge. The long span is kept horizontally sturdy by a truss-like series of poles and wires that extend out beyond the deck. Several wind stays are attached to the cliff sides to keep vertical movements to a minimum.

In addition to the bridge, the state owned forest is home to several hot springs and the Lukai aborigine tribe whose famous slate houses have been preserved. Many of their symbols can be seen on the colorful suspension bridge towers.
