Qiandao Lake has become one of the most popular recreation spots for citizens of Hangzhou city who want to enjoy a weekend away from the hectic urban noise and congestion. An extension from the main S31 expressway was opened in 2005 allowing quicker access to the many hotels and resorts that line the edges of the man-made Xin'anjiang reservoir.

The 4-lane S32 expressway spur crosses a now submerged creek via a 1.34 kilometer viaduct with a 252 meter long CFST arch in the center. Once the arch was closed, concrete was pumped into the main rib tubes from the bottom up. Once hardened, the concrete solidifies and stiffens the arch, improving the compressive strength of the entire structure. First used by the Chinese in 1990, they have refined and improved the technique and now use it on the majority of their steel arch bridges.

An extradosed bridge was also studied for the Qiandao Lake crossing with a main span of 125 meters.
