Komurhan Bridge is one of the longest single tower cable stayed bridges in the world with a main span of 380 meters. The 4-lane highway bridge is the third major crossing of the famous Euphrates River at this same location. The first bridge was a 164 meter long concrete arch completed in 1932 by the Swedish company Nydqvist & Holm AB with a main span of 108 meters.
Once the Karakaya Dam and reservoir was completed a 287 meter long high level beam bridge opened in 1986 with a span of 135 meters and a deck approximately 75 meters above the normal water level of the Euphrates River.
The 2020 Kömürhan Bridge has a span configuration of 180+380+50+50 meters supported by a tower 168.5 meters tall. The main span deck consists of a steel orthotropic box with side spans of concrete. The Komurhan Bridge was designed by PONTING-PIPENBAHER CONSULTING ENGINEERS.
