1974-2009
Opened in 1974, the original Lontrano viaduct served Italy’s A3 motorway for just 25 years before it was bypassed on a new alignment downstream. The new Lontrano viaduct consists of two bridges, one of which was partially completed in 2008. The simplified design has equal depth steel girder spans instead of suspended concrete beam spans as was on the original. The 363 foot (110.5 mtr) high piers were the tallest ever imploded on a bridge in the world. Nearby Sant'Onofrio has similar sized piers and was also imploded after completion of a newer span parallel to it.
