The highest bridge ever built on the mainland of Spain and the second highest Spanish bridge overall after the Tilos Viaduct on the Canary Island of La Palma, the massive Montabliz Viaduct is a major component on the new A67 Autovia de la Meseta or Road of the Plateau, stretching 126 miles (203 kms) between the interior province of Palencia, across the granite peaks of the Cantabrian mountain range and into the Cantabrian Autonomous region port of Santander.

Towering 490 feet (149 mtrs) over the Bisueña River, the Montabliz Viaduct is the most costly component on what has become the most expensive stretch of highway in Spain’s history. Constructed by the balanced cantilever method, the prestressed concrete beam bridge consists of a central span of 574 feet (175 mtrs) flanked by two smaller spans of 509 feet (135 mtrs) and approach spans of 413 feet (126 mtrs) and 361 feet (110 mtrs). The five spans follow a continuously curving arc with a radius of 2,297 feet (700 mtrs).

Each of the four towering piers was constructed with self-climbing falsework. Building skyward in 13 foot (4 mtr) sections, a tapered shape was maintained on all 4 sides to keep the mass of the towers to a minimum while maintaining an elegant profile that blends into the deep valley of trees. The spans themselves were built outward from the tops of the towers in 16 foot (5 mtr) sections by the largest traveling cranes ever built for a bridge in Spain. Supported by a single cell box girder, the 85 foot (26.1 mtr) wide, 5-lane deck is banked at 8 percent to counter the forces of the curving roadway.

Just north of Montabliz is the Pujayo Viaduct which towers 230 feet (70 mtrs) high across several spans of 328 feet (100 mtrs).
