The Nissibi Euprhates River Bridge is a photogenic cable stayed span that crosses the giant Lake Ataturk that was formed in 1992 from the completion of the 169 meter high Ataturk Dam.
Completed in 2015, the 4-lane, 610 meter long cable stayed bridge has a main span of 400 meters supported on towers as tall as 96 meters. The orthotropic steel deck is 24.5 meters wide. The reservoir is approximately 50 meters deep at the crossing.
With 90% of its water originating in Turkey, the Euphrates River is one of the most important rivers in the Middle East. Treaties have maintained that a certain amount of water flow from the Tigris and Euphrates Rivers must be shared with downstream neighbors Syria and Iraq.
