Sochi Skybridge
Sochi Skybridge
Со́чи Скайбридж
Sochi, Krasnodar Krai, Russia
679 feet high / 207 meters high
1,440 foot span / 439 meter span
2014
Despite a land mass nearly three times as large as Europe, Russia was a country that never had even a single bridge over 100 meters in height. That all changed in 2014 when the Sochi Skybridge opened as the first major permanent bungee bridge site in Russia with a height exceeding 200 meters. The central span of 439 meters was upon its opening the longest pure cantenary footbridge suspension span in the world despite the unique design where the main support cables are above the walkway. Among traditional Tibet-style cantenary footbridge spans there area at least a dozen that are longer.
The Sochi Skybridge is actually part of an entire Skypark operated under famous bungee operator AJ Hackett. The thrill sport attractions include first and foremost the 207 meter bungee jump, a lower 69 meter bungee jump, a 170 meter swing, the Megatroll zip line, the "Mowgli" rope park and the Via Ferrata fixed tether mountain hiking trail.
The gargantuan span of the Skybridge is composed of eight 52mm cables connected by I-beams spaced as much as 5 meters apart. Suspended below the cables is a walkway with a number of step downs that are designed to keep the deck relatively flat. The first of two large "pods" on the bridge is located on the west end and houses the lower 69 meter bungee jump as well as a gift shop and other concessions. A smaller pod in the center of the bridge contains the higher 207 meter bungee drop.
