Although the crossing is essentially a Tibet-style suspension bridge with a sagging, catenary deck, there are two insubstantial towers on either end that support a more conventional configuration of above deck cable and suspenders that do not seem to be supporting the weight of the deck but were more likely added to stiffen the span and reduce oscillations.
Then a much more substantial glass footbridge was built upstream near the waterfall with a more conventional two tower design.
The Tianjishan Footbridgea are located across the end of a spectacular amphitheater where the river drops down a waterfall more then 200 meters high. On the east side of the gorge a cantilevered glasswalk overlook was installed sometime after the footbridge with a 200 meter drop. This inexpensive skywalk platform has a minimal amount of steel within the truss and cannot support more than a few people at one time for safety.
There are at least 3 other cantilevered cliffside viewing platforms below the two footbridges on the north side that may no longer be open to the public due to inadequate engineering of the steel support struts as well as significant deterioration and rust. There are also cliffwalks along both sides of the canyon that are more than 200 meters above the bottom of the canyon.
Thrill seekers can also glide across the canyon in a suspended tramway 300 meters above the bottom of the gorge.
A trek of several kilometers is required from the ticket office and parking area to the footbridges. Along the riverwalk there are a number of photo spots with hanging chairs, suspended slat walks, full size dinosaurs and cultural sites.
