One of the many high viaducts on the A3, the new 2009 Viadotto Lontrano was one of several viaducts to be rebuilt on a stretch along the Tanagro river valley south of Napoli near Auletta. The original Lontrano viaduct served Italy’s A3 motorway for just 25 years before it was bypassed by the new Lontrano on a new downstream alignment with a wider radius. The new Lontrano viaduct consists of two bridges, one of which was partially completed in 2008. The simplified design has equal depth steel girder spans instead of suspended concrete beam spans as was on the original. The 363 foot (110.5 mtr) high piers were the tallest ever imploded on a bridge in the world. Nearby Sant'Onofrio was also rebuilt in a similar fashion with a downstream alignment bypassing the older structure which was eventually imploded in spectacular fashion with the towering piers pushed over like giant dominoes.
The total length of the bridge is 626 meters.
