Yumessenin Bridge was completed in 2011 in anticipation of the completion of a large dam and reservoir in the mountains near the border of Akita, Iwate and Miyagi Prefectures. The older section of route 342 was rerouted over the Yumessenin Bridge and into a 1.5 kilometer tunnel.
