Tenryukyo Bridge opened in 2019 as part of the new E69/474 bypass of Iida city in Nagano Prefecture.
The 210 meter long main span of Tenryukyo Bridge is unique for having the flattest arch span ever built in Japan with a rise ratio of just 11.1. This surpassed the Jogakura Bridge which has an arch span to height ratio of 10.8. This gives the profile of the arch a very shallow and flat look that many find more appealing. Some also feel the higher elevation level of the foundations are more environmentally friendly to the river gorge.
In Portugal the Infante Dom Henrique Bridge opened in 2003 with a 280 meter main span with a shallow arch rise ratio of just 11.66.
Although not as large, there is a 107 meter steel arch span in Japan with a ratio of just 12.5.
